I LOST HER (2017)

I lost her
I’m sorry
I lost her

I found her
But by the time I found her
I didn’t recognize her

Something feral shined in her eyes
Like she had seen someone slain before her
Like she had seen herself slain before her
Taken, over and over again

Wrists scarred
Heart hole gaping
Blood on her face
Scraped up legs

Heart gone
She had to leave it
It weighed too much
So she scooped it out
And left it behind
It was too much a burden to carry with her

In realizing it was a grave mistake
To live on without a heart
She returned for it
Where she had buried it in a shallow grave
And applied layer after layer of earth to her discarded organ
But it was gone

I lost it
I’m sorry
I lost it

I found it
But by the time I found it
The animals had already gotten to it

Shredded aortic tissue
Leaves and twigs impaled
Little wormies creeping and crawling about
Shriveled, drying

Nothing but a tiny flicker left deep within
One that with a faint breeze
Barely strong enough to tickle a flower
Would surely oust the flicker
Into nothing but a grim smoky trail
Out and cold forever

Too big a burden to carry, that heart

So she was lost
And it was lost
And she was found
And it was found
Never the same again
Wandering forever through the woods
Screaming with her arm thrust through the empty hole in her chest
Bleeding
